NGUYEN TRAN
Region IV
Nguyen Tran has been part of the EOPS Program for the last two years as she has diligently pursued her biochemistry major, maintaining a 3.5 GPA. She will be attending UC Berkeley this Fall, where she will tackle Premed coursework. Nguyen is the first person in her family to attend college and she is confident that her education will help her to make a difference in the world. She first became passionate about medicine while observing the hardships her grandparents experienced due to diabetes, seeing them both pass away when she was only 5 years old. She came to America by herself at the young age of 13, hoping to study science, and, in her own words, "apply this cognitive skill in creating positive change to my community and the future of medicine." She triumphed over financial and educational obstacles such as learning English and her family being unable to afford college. On top of her school responsibilities, Nguyen sought out opportunities to attend the Stanford Summer Community College Premedical Program and Prep Medico at University of California, Davis School of Medicine. In addition, she acquired hands-on experience by volunteering as a lead health advocate in the busy emergency department at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. She spent Summer 2018 conducting research in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford School of Medicine. Nguyen hopes to someday work for Doctors Without Borders, spreading her knowledge and helping hands to parts of the world where good healthcare is missing.
